Growing Pains for BU’s Hindus

Increasing recognition, but where to gather?

The first sign of reverence is the shoes left outside the School of Theology room. Inside, their 50 owners sit on the carpeted floor as incense perfumes the air near a table draped in white and splashed with colorful murtis (icons) of Hindu deities, including Ganesh, dispatcher of obstacles. (Traders chant his many names at the start of business each day on the Bombay Stock Exchange, according to Stephen Prothero, a College of Arts & Sciences professor of religion.) To the side of the table sit a married Hindu priest and priestess from nearby Lexington in robes, brought in to lead this late-February celebration of the festival of the god Shiva.Tanah Lot

Situated on a large rock, Tanah Lot is one of the most famous Hindu temples in Bali, and probably the most photographed. The Tanah Lot temple has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple is one of 7 sea temples, each within eyesight of the next, to form a chain along the south-western coast of Bali.Virupaksha Temple

The Virupaksha Temple in the city of Hampi in India started out as a small shrine and grew into a large complex under the Vijayanagara rulers. It is believed that this temple has been functioning uninterruptedly ever since the small shrine was built in the 7th century AD which makes it one of the oldest functioning Hindu temples in India. The largest entrance tower of the temple is 50 meters high.

Hindus in Pakistan angry, helpless'

Hindus in Pakistan are feeling "angry and helpless" after being targeted in a spate of incidents, including abductions and forced conversion of girls, says a leading rights activist and a Hindu leader.

'Hindus in Pakistan angry, helpless'
"The Hindu community is not afraid...rather they feel helpless and angry," Zohra Yusuf, chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, told IANS on phone from Islamabad.
She said there is "forcible conversion of young Hindu women" and kidnapping for ransom in Balochistan and Sindh provinces.
"A case of forced conversion went right up to the Supreme Court where the young woman said she wanted to go back with her family," she added.
The human rights activist said Hindus are now demanding a legislation to end conversions.
